Chapter 6

Sylvia

I'm standing outside the hotel, anxiously waiting for Lucas to pick me up. It's quiet and a little chilly, but it isn't unpleasant. I maybe should’ve worn pants instead of a skirt, but I’ll be okay. The only thing I can hear is the sound of a red truck idling. It's clear out at the end of the parking lot where no one else is parked. Why would anyone park all the way out there? My blood begins to pump as my mind races.

Is that him? Is he going to try and finish what he started?

The note has me on edge, and what really grinds my gears is that I immediately called the police, but once again, it doesn’t really seem like it’s getting me anywhere. They took the report, but there isn’t a whole lot else they can do. I asked them to look into Brady and see if he’s been around the area. They assured me they would, but I have my doubts.

“Good evening,” a voice says.

I yelp and spin around, ready to bolt back up to my room, but it's just the front desk guy coming out for a smoke.

“I'm sorry,” I say, trying to calm myself.

“I didn't mean to scare you.”

“No, no,” I say as my heart pounds against my chest. “That was all me. I'm a little on edge.”

“Everything okay?”

“Question,” I say.

“Shoot.”

“Has anyone asked about me? Like what room I’m staying in or anything?”

“Not that I know of.”

“Okay, thanks.”

Doesn’t really mean anything. It was someone different working this morning. The cop I talked to suggested that maybe the note wasn’t meant for me or that it was a prank. I don’t understand how it’s so hard to just take my concerns fucking seriously.

A moment later, a pickup truck pulls into the lot and up under the canopy where I'm waiting. Lucas steps out and comes around the side of the truck to greet me. He is so goddamn handsome. I've never seen anything like him before. His blue eyes roam over me before landing on my eyes and damn... He makes me melt right here on the spot.

“Hi,” I say quietly.

“You look beautiful,” he says before opening the passenger door.

“Thanks.” My heart races and for a moment I’m able to forget about the note, though it doesn’t last long.

“No problem,” he says as I climb into the seat and settle in, taking in the clean scent of his vehicle. Everything in here looks immaculate, like he just drove it off the lot. There’s not a speck of dust or a rogue straw paper or anything.

“This might be the cleanest vehicle I've ever gotten into before,” I say when he gets in on the driver’s side.

“I like it clean and tidy,” he says.

“We won't work out as roommates then,” I say with a chuckle. “For the record.”

“Oh... You're a dirty girl?” he asks, cocking his eyebrow.

“Not dirty,” I say, throwing a playful glare in his direction. “Maybe messy... I can be a little scatter-brained sometimes. I’m always jumping from one thing to the next.
